On Jan. 6, 1975, a very special person entered our world. She was the pride and joy of her parents, James and Virginia Koehn, and her older brother, Tim. This bright young girl attended school at Howard Elementary, Walnut Junior High, and Grand Island Senior High (graduate 1993). While growing up, she enjoyed softball and band. During childhood she became best friends with Mindy (Lueck) Weaver. For many years, Mindy and she were inseparable. As with many high school graduates, she struggled with finding the career that she was born for. She worked at Central Nebraska Federal Credit Union for a while and enjoyed the experience, but lacked the passion. She then went to work for Alltel. This was also a job she enjoyed, but again lacked the passion. She returned to college to get a degree in Elementary Education. She had spent her high school days working for a daycare facility and decided she wanted to spend her time helping little kids. She always knew this, but like so many of us, it took her awhile to see it. She was fortunate to find a position teaching at Alda Elementary School. She had found her calling. When Alda consolidated with Wood River, she was asked to move to Wood river Elementary School, where she taught fourth grade. Her parents and brother could see the passion she had for teaching. Her eyes were brighter then they had ever been. The lives of the students she taught will be forever changed by the love and knowledge that she bestowed upon them. Unfortunately, too few students were given the opportunity to be touched by her. She was taken from us on October 15, 2007. There were so many more lives for her to touch. However, the ones she did will forever be grateful for the time she spent with them. There will never be a person kinder than she was. She will be greatly missed by those who loved her. Her nieces, Kara and Kayla, meant the world to her. Although they had such a short time on earth with her, they will never be allowed to forget her and how she loved them. She had a sign in her home that said Live, Love, Laugh. Nancy certainly did all that. Those left to remember her have lost a wonderful human being with a heart of gold. However, the world has gained an angel like no other……. Nancy Lynn Koehn. The family established a memorial scholarship fund with the Wood River Community Centennial Foundation. The scholarships will be awarded in the years her students graduate from Wood River Rural High school (2013, 2014 and 2015.) |
