George "Joe" Dingwall Allan, III was born October 20, 1952 in Grand Island, Nebraska to George Allan, Jr. and Dolores (Greenwood) Allan. He lived on a farm northwest of Wood River with his parents and five sisters. He received his early education at District 5. As a child, he was a member of the Cameron Huskies 4-H Club, attended the Mennonite Bible School and Berean Fundamental Church in Shelton.

Joe graduated from Wood River Rural High School in 1971. Throughout high school he participated in cross country, football, and wrestling. He also enjoyed hunting.

He enlisted in The United States Air Force in 1971 and was stationed in the Philippines. Upon his discharge in 1975, he returned to Wood River where he became engaged in farming.

On August 7, 1976 he married Susan Ann Wiese in Grand Island, Nebraska. They lived south of Shelton, later moving northwest of Wood River. In October 1983, they moved to the Charles A. Wiese farm south of Alda.

Joe was the proud father of two children, Elizabeth Ann (Ibby) born December 17,1982, and George Dingwall (Judd) Allan, IV born February 4, 1985. He farmed and was a stockman at the time of his death.

Joe was a member of the Wood River Fair Board and enjoyed helping to sponsor it’s yearly rodeo. He provided livestock for the cattle demonstrations held at Husker Harvest Days for several years.

He enjoyed all types of sports and outdoor activities, including hunting and trapping, and was an avid skier.

He was actively involved in Abundant Life Christian Center of Grand Island where he was a Youth Sponsor, a Sunday School Teacher and a greeter.

Joe is survived by his wife Susan: two children, Ibby and Judd, all at home; his parents George and Dolores Allan of Wood River; five sisters Lynda Thurston of Kansas City, Missouri, Betty Raymond of Grand Island, Karen Codner and Barbara Huxtable, both of Wood River and Diane Hahn of Garden City, Kansas; and nephew and nieces.

Joe's death occurred on January 2, 1991 as he and Judd were in route to check a trap line along the Platte River south of Alda near their pasture. He was shot and killed by James T. Hall while recording the license number of a vehicle that was hidden on his property.

Favorite memories he leaves with his children are:

Ibby: going out for pizza, vacations, and swimming as a family.

Judd: going to the fair and riding horses when we worked cattle.
